Jon Mick is a comedian from Edmonton, Alberta.

When he needed a website, something to “build his brand,” he called Kobot.

He got a government grant and work began. It started out well, but soon everything went wrong. Everything.

The Players:

Jon Mick

Megalomaniacal client who’s never satisfied. Grant recipient.

Kobot

Web design professionals.
Promised $75K.

Kobot’s Intern

Student. Jon Mick fan. Future web professional.

This is the story of the ill-fated project, that came to be known as …

Canada’s Greatest Living Comedian.

Pre-LaunchSeptember 4-18, 2014

The project officially began on September 19 with the launch party at the Artery, hosted by Jon. Prior to that date, however, we dropped the "Making Of" video which set the scene for the whole project—namely, Jon's misreading of the grant letter—and Kobot "hired" its intern, whose social media outlets and personality would prove to be so important later on.

Kobot Intern

So excited for my first internship! I can't wait to learn everything about web design lol.

Kobot Intern

Making coffee!

Jon Mick

jonmick.ca launches September 19th, but you can go there now and peep a sweet making of video! CHYEAH!

Kobot Intern

I think this dog ate catnip.

Kobot Intern

Transcend's Santa Lucia coffee. Notes of stewed fruit, chocolate with a nutty finish. Refreshing and creamy with a dark brown sugar finish. #justinternthings#intern

Jon Mick

Tommorow night at the Artery I launch a website AND release an album. Come help me celebrate!

LaunchFriday,
September 19, 2014

The website launched and a launch party was held at Edmonton venue, The Artery.

Kobot Intern

I guess there wasn't enough beer for everyone, but everyone at Kobot is really excited to have launched jonmick.ca!

Kobot Intern

Guys I'm not on the list! Can you come to the front and get me? @bryanbirtles @bryankulba @pastlives

Monday,
September 22, 2014

The first Monday after launch, Jon visited the office to discuss the changes he wanted to the site, most importantly the Fart Soundboard.

Kobot Intern

Look who came in to meet about his website!! So excited to meet Jon Mick, I've heard so much about him, lol!

Kobot Intern

Uh oh! Jon Mickk is pretty mad about not having a fart soundboard! LOL!

Kobot Intern

Jon Mick walking Kobot through the changes he wants.

Kobot Intern

Here are all of Jon Mick's changes I guess?!? LOL!

Kobot Intern

The fart soundboard on http://jonmick.ca is now live! Great idea @ross_and_rachel_4ever !! Lol!

Tuesday,
September 23, 2014

On Tuesday, of the site's first week up remember, Jon wanted another change. He didn't think his real work history reflected his worth as an individual. He wanted different jobs listed, including "Mensa Alumnus," "Astronaut" and "Gigalo."

Kobot Intern

Just making some more coffee!

Kobot Intern

LOL, Boss! RT: @bryanarchy …and then a client asks you to just go ahead and change reality.

Wednesday,
September 24, 2014

Jon demands the theme song he "wrote" be added to the page when you scroll. Also, our intern accidentally dressed like Kobot's designer, Bryan Kulba.

Kobot Intern

Craaaaaaazy!!! We're twins! LOL!

Kobot

Jon asked us to add his "theme song" to the website.

Kobot Intern

Takin care of business! LOL!

Jon Mick

Was messing around in photoshop and think a game would be a perfect addition to the website! Can we get a little "Flappy Mick" action going please?!@bryanbirtles @pastlives @bryankulba

Thursday,
September 25, 2014

Jon wants to change the URL to his site, against Kobot's recommendation. Leaving behind the straightforward "jonmick.ca," he goes with "canadasgreatestlivingcomedian.ca" (he went with "living" to avoid angering the ghost of John Candy.) Also, our intern "accidentally" dressed like Bryan Kulba. Again.

Finally, Jon demands a game be added to the site, "for the kids." He claims to have designed it, but it's pretty reminiscent of another game featuring a bird that flaps.

Kobot Intern

Me and my mentor @bryankulba dressed the same again!!! LOL!

Kobot Intern

Just learnin how to make websites with muh mentor, @bryankulba! LOL!

Kobot Intern

Here's me launching @ross_and_rachel_4ever's game on his site: Falppy Mick!! LOL!

Friday,
September 26, 2014

After such a stressful week, all of Kobot (minus the intern) heads to the spa to get pampered, leaving her in charge of the office. Meanwhile, Jon demands Kobot's intern add cat memes to his site in an effort to appeal to the Internet crowd.

Kobot Intern

Guys where are you I'm stuck in the rain! LOL!@bryankulba @pastlives @bryanbirtles

Kobot Intern

@bryanbirtles drove by, gave me his key, and told me the guys are taking a spa day. Guess I'm in charge! LOL!

Kobot Intern

Uh oh. I broke something.

Kobot Intern

Jon Mick (@ross_and_rachel_4ever) plus tons of cats. Just the way he wanted! LOL!

Jon Mick

Finally got my website in tune with what the internet really craves. Go visit www.canadasgreatestlivingcomedian.ca and see for yourself.

Monday,
September 29, 2014

Having returned after the weekend, Kobot removes all the cat memes. Jon receives a fortune cookie at lunch that makes him want to give back to his fans through a series of video Q&A sessions. He starts answering questions that day.

Jon Mick

Ugh, never had a fortune cookie hit me so hard. It's time to re-think some things.

Kobot Intern

Jon Mick (@ross_and_rachel_4ever) is at Kobot's office for a lunch meeting! I guess he got a weird fortune cookie?!?

Tuesday,
September 30, 2014

A second day of video Q&As. Also, the URL has been changed back to jonmick.ca: Jon has been somewhat humbled.

Wednesday,
October 1, 2014

Kobot is invited to fill in at the last minute for Steve Wozniak at a TED Talk in San Francisco, and eagerly accepts. The whole office—minus the intern—takes off for San Francisco immediately.

Meanwhile, Jon's final Q&A—which he does live—goes horribly awry when he forgets to shut off his webcam and broadcasts every embarrassing moment of his life for the next two days. With Kobot in San Francisco and the intern not allowed to touch the site after the cat incident, no one can disable the webcam.

Kobot Intern

Jon Mick (@Jongolias) is answering your questions LIVE on his website: http://jonmick.ca. Tune in now! #yeg #yegcomedy #yegqanda

Kobot Intern

I don't know what to do about this!!! Jon Mick's site is ruined. His webcam is broken and is just broadcasting his life!

Kobot Intern

I still can't get a hold of the @wearekobot guys and now http://jonmick.ca is broadcasting @Jongolias doing jazzercise! #yegfail

Kobot Intern

Too scared to answer this.

Friday,
October 3, 2014

Kobot arrives back in Edmonton and is finally able to turn off the webcam for Jon. At the same time, they realize that he has yet to pay them any of the $75 000 he promised them—and now he's ducking their calls. Something is squirrelly, so Kobot goes looking for him.

In the end, Jon misread his grant letter: what he thought said $100 000 actually said $10 000. Kobot spends the weekend talking to lawyers.

Kobot Intern

Jon Mick promised Kobot $75,000 to make his website, but he hasn't paid us and now he is ducking us. So we're out looking for him at his favourite haunts.

Kobot Intern

Still lookin' for Jon Mick. Keep an eye out!

Kobot Intern

No Jon Mick at the Wunderbar.

Kobot Intern

Craig Martell says he hasn't seen Jon Mick all day.

Kobot Intern

We got a bit tired so we're stopping for coffee at Transcend. But then, back to finding Jon Mick!

Kobot Intern

I THINK WE FOUND HIM.

Monday,
October 6, 2014

Kobot decides against suing their client and, in an effort to raise the money he owes his web design company, Jon launches Mickstarter to crowd fund the "website he deserves." He sets the minimum donation level at $5000. No one donates.

Jon Mick

Had to add a few pop ups to the website to help monetize because it turns out I didn't actually receive $100,000 in funding. Go to http://mickstarter.jonmick.ca for more details.

Tuesday,
October 7, 2014

While googling his own name, Jon finds a Tumblr called Mickileaks that someone from Kobot has been keeping since the beginning of the project. It documents every dumb request or decision Jon every made. He's very upset.

Kobot Intern

Just making MORE coffee.

Kobot Intern

Making coffee. AGAIN.

Wednesday,
October 8, 2014

Kobot arrives at the office to find a legal document shoved through their door. Jon Mick is suing them.

Thursday,
October 9, 2014

Kobot is forced to countersue Jon Mick. The intern is sent to deliver the legal documents, but mysteriously never returns.

Kobot Intern

Now I gotta drop off this lawsuit to Jon Mick. I thought I'd learn web design here, not how to sue your own clients. :(

Friday,
October 10, 2014

Kobot launches a site for Edmonton Comedian—and new "favourite client"—Craig Martell that looks awfully familiar.

Jon fires Kobot for this transgression, but not before stealing their intern (through a WWE-style video). He claims the two of them will work through the Thanksgiving long weekend to deliver a brand new site.

Kobot Intern

Me and my awesome new boss,@ross_and_rachel_4ever!

Tuesday,
October 14, 2014

Jon launches his new site—built on the Jeocities platform—and connects it via webring to a dozen other people named Jon Mick from around the world. He couldn't be prouder of the work he and his new intern did.

Tuesday,
October 28, 2014

After a week of foisting Jeocities on the world, Kobot and Jon Mick admit that everything was a joke. A joke! From a comedian!?!?!
